Steps to Take if You Notice a Filling Fell Out

Posted on 6/7/2021 by SRD Russellville
Steps to Take if You Notice a Filling Fell OutFillings can occasionally fall out of your teeth. This can be due to teeth grinding, decay near the filling, an injury, or another reason, but regardless of what caused your filling to fail, you should call us immediately if one of your fillings comes out. In the meantime, here are some steps you should take until your appointment.

Save Your Filling

We are sometimes able to reuse a filling that comes out rather than placing a new one. You should not try placing the filling back on your tooth just in case you accidentally bite down on it or swallow it. Rinse the filling with warm water and keep it in a plastic bag or small container so you can bring it to your appointment.

Gargle With Salt Water

Since the part of your tooth that was previously covered with a filling is now exposed, it is very important to keep this area clean and free of bacteria. Mix a half teaspoon of salt into a glass of warm water and gargle for up to 20 seconds. Gargling with salt water will keep your mouth clean and prevent infection. You should also brush the exposed area very gently.

Try Dental Wax

If we are not able to see you right away, you should buy dental wax or dental cement at a pharmacy. These products allow you to mold a temporary filling and protect your exposed tooth from food, debris, and bacteria until your appointment.

Other Tips

You should avoid chewing on the side of your mouth where you lost a filling, as chewing could exacerbate any discomfort you might be feeling and introduce food particles and bacteria into the hole. You can try applying ice to the area or taking an over-the-counter pain reliever. If you have severe pain, bleeding, or the area is leaking fluid, this could be a sign of infection and you should seek emergency treatment. Call us today to learn more.
