Sometimes we have patients who have smaller than average sizes of teeth. Generally, females have smaller teeth than men. However, if you have abnormally small teeth, this is referred to as microdontia. This abnormality can occur in adults as well as children.
Microdontia is generally referred to as a rare condition and is sometimes associated with hormone dysfunction and may occur concurrently with other body abnormalities. Sometimes just one tooth is smaller than the others. It may be that most of the teeth are affected. Recent studies suggest genetic and environmental influences are factors in developing microdontia.
Symptoms of Microdontia
If all of your teeth are smaller than normal, this is called truly generalized microdontia. If a few of your teeth, but not all your teeth are smaller than normal, this is called relative generalized microdontia. It is possible to have only one tooth that is abnormally small in your mouth. This is called localized microdontia. The good news is that there are several ways to reshape a tooth. The size of the tooth can be changed as well. Porcelain veneers are one possible solution for certain cases of microdontia. Porcelain veneers are a durable and natural looking cover which is affixed to the tooth. Dental crowns and dental bonding can also be used to improve microdontia.
