What to Do Until We Can See You if You Lose a Filling

Posted on 12/7/2020 by SRD Russellville
What to Do Until We Can See You if You Lose a FillingDental fillings can come loose and even fall out. This can happen if you bite down too hard while eating, or it can be the result of bruxism, injury, or tooth decay near the filling. You should call our office immediately if you lose a filling, but there are steps you can take to protect your tooth until we can see you for your appointment.

Keep the Filling Safe

We may be able to re-cement the filling that fell out rather than placing a new one on your tooth, so it is important to save it just in case. Rinse the filling with water and keep it in a Ziploc bag. We will ask you to bring it with you when you come in for your appointment.

Keep the Affected Area Clean

Rinse your mouth with salt water to keep bacteria away from your exposed tooth, and brush the area gently. If you notice any spots that cause pain while brushing, avoid these areas. We will give you more information about keeping your exposed tooth clean when you call our office to schedule an appointment.

Fill the Hole

You can find dental cement or wax at most pharmacies or online. This will act as a temporary filling until we can see you. You should not use dental cement if you experience any discomfort upon contact with the exposed area.

Manage Discomfort

While you wait for your appointment, try not to chew on the side where your filling came out, and avoid very crunchy or chewy foods. If you have pain or discomfort, try icing the area and ask us about taking over-the-counter pain medication. If your pain becomes severe, the area starts to bleed, or your affected tooth chips or cracks, you should seek emergency dental treatment. Contact our office if you have questions.
