You Always Want to Brush Before Bed

Posted on 10/19/2020 by SRD Russellville
You Always Want to Brush Before BedSo, what's the big deal about brushing before bedtime? You can skip brushing, right? Well, sure you can but a lot can happen in the overnight hours. If you are sleeping for seven to eight hours a night that's a lot of time without brushing. And if you are just brushing in the morning and evening that means you will not have brushed your teeth in twenty-four hours.

Brushing at night helps stymie the growth of bacteria in your mouth and the buildup of plaque which can turn into tartar and eventually gingivitis if it is not taken care of properly. Gingivitis can easily turn into gum disease. Most professionals recommend brushing right after dinner as well as prior to bedtime.

Get the Most out of Brushing

This might sound ridiculous but using good form does help properly clean teeth and help to get the most out of your brushing time. Use small even strokes in a gentle motion. It does not require a lot of pressure to brush them. Brush the outer surfaces first and then the inside surfaces.

An electric toothbrush with an oscillating head is the best way to brush. They have a shut off circuit which engages if you apply too much pressure. This keeps your brushing evening and with the proper pressure.

Even though we are told this repeatedly in ads and social media posts patients still do not floss like they should. This provides a deeper cleaning that a toothbrush cannot provide. It gets food particles from between teeth and helps hinder bacteria and plaque buildup between teeth.

The last step recommended is using therapeutic mouthwash which contains special ingredients to help strengthen and nourish teeth. A simple over the counter cosmetic mouthwash will not do the same thing. Make sure to always brush before bedtime. If you have questions, we are always here for you.
