Most people are well aware that they should brush their teeth twice a day, floss once a day, and keep up with their regular dental checkups. But many people are less sure about exactly how long they should be brushing for, what technique they should use, and how their teeth should feel after brushing. Read on to learn the answers to these questions.
How Long Should You Brush Your Teeth For?
We recommend brushing your teeth twice a day, usually once in the morning and once at night, for two minutes each time. However, studies have shown that the average time people spend brushing their teeth is just 45 seconds. Brushing for less than two minutes does not allow enough time to effectively clean off the plaque that has built up on your teeth overnight or throughout the day. On the other hand, brushing for longer than two minutes is not going to “deep clean” your teeth, and can actually damage your enamel and gums, especially if you are brushing too roughly.
What is the Best Brushing Technique?
We recommend using a soft-bristled toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to your gumline. Use short strokes and a scrubbing motion. Never overbrush, as this can be damaging to your teeth and gums. Use just enough pressure that you can feel the bristles of your toothbrush against your gums. If your gums hurt or bleed when you brush, or if the bristles on your toothbrush are flattened, you are brushing too hard. You should replace your toothbrush every three to four months.
How Should Your Teeth Feel After Brushing?
You should be able to tell that your teeth are clean by how they feel. Use your tongue to check all the surfaces of your teeth, including the ones that are more difficult to reach with your toothbrush. If your teeth feel smooth and slick, you did a good job brushing them. If they feel rough or fuzzy, you might not be using the proper brushing technique or brushing for enough time.
